In 1984, what is the significance of Winston's varicose ulcer?


In 1984, what is the significance of Winston's varicose ulcer?
Is it symbolic for anything? I'm asking because it was somewhat prevalent throughout the book, but it was never explained.

Did it itch whenever he was doing something unorthodox or something?

I'm just curious.

Not that I've heard of. It was just indicating that his body was weary and worn for his age (as opposed to youthful Julia).
